Heroes: Big and Small 1 | Page 2

Dear readers,

I am Anastasia Ramirez and I am a freshman at Bioscience High School. This magazine is about heroes, not only superheroes but real people who do extraordinary things. The feature story is about disabled individuals being discriminated against and judged. These people are heroes because they are able to go about their lives when society views them as less than. My grandfather is blind and I have grown up watching him cook, use an iPhone, go camping, go to Disneyland, and so many more things that people who are not disabled take for granted. The thing that sent me on this journey of making this magazine started when my family and I went to the movies. My grandfather got special headphones at the movie theatre that describe the movie to him so he was able to enjoy it just as much as the rest of us did. Afterwards, I was standing alone waiting for everyone to come out of the restroom. Standing not even four feet away from me, was a group of ladies talking about why a blind man shouldn’t go to the movies. I knew instantly they were talking about my grandfather. I was so offended by it and I stood there in shock and didn’t say anything to them. I wanted to do something and this magazine was born.
