Heritage High School Well Dressing 2016
We were delighted to be asked to produce a well dressing
by Clowne in Bloom this year. It was a fantastic opportunity
for students and staff to get creative and try something new.
We researched the techniques for pushing the petals and
seeds into the wet clay without damaging them and worked
out what our design should be. We wanted it to be simple,
colourful and effective. We also wanted it to fit in with the
theme that was chosen for the local well dressings this year.

As 2016 is 150 years since the birth of Beatrix Potter, her works
and life were chosen as the theme that would link the designs.
We decided to base our design around Beatrix Potter’s second
great love, after writing, which was conservation. Thanks to
her generous donations the National Trust is able to conserve
nearly a quarter of the land in the Lake District for future
generations. At our meeting with Greg Lindley from Clowne in
Bloom we found out about the conservation work being done
on the Linear Lines and the attempts being made to encourage
native birds and wildlife back into the area. We decided that
we would use an image of a bird in our design to represent
this conservation work and wrote the words ‘Welcome Home’
as a message to the local wildlife that are returning to our area.
In total we made three panels, each with a different design.
One of the panels featured an oak leaf to represent the
National Trust, and the lands and houses that Beatrix
Potter left to them as part of her conservation legacy.
We made a colourful rainbow background on one of
the panels to allow us to showcase the wide range of
colours that appear in our school garden. The Heritage Eco
Group have worked extremely hard on transforming the
garden into a haven for wildlife and birds so there was an
abundance of materials to choose from. Nearly all of the
materials in our designs came from the Heritage garden.
The designs were created by Shannon Palmer, Abigail
Hattersley, Shannon Bainbridge and Cameron Butcher. We
would like to thank them for their hard work along with the
Heritage Eco Crew, Mrs Capps, Mrs Gore and Mrs Greaves. The
designs looked fantastic an d were an excellent showcase for
the beautiful flowers and plants that are growing in our school.
