Heritage Students Have a (Three) Wheely Good Time
On the 27th of March we interviewed a few of the students; they found the
BBC News School Report fantastic! We have plenty of pictures from
behind the scenes of the students in action, they‟ve loved the experience!
It took a lot of effort to finish for the 2pm deadline; at the start we had a
bit of trouble so it caused us to be behind, but the outcome is still
brilliant!
Ms Newton, LRC Manager
On Thursday 20th January Extreme Wheels came to Heritage High School to award some of our
top Vivo earners in Years 7 and 8 with a session on the KMX bikes. The students braved the cold
weather (including a light fall of snow!) to ride the KMX bikes around a track on the school
MUGA. KMX bikes have three wheels and are very low to the ground. Students had to wear
comfortable outdoor clothing so that they did not have to spend the rest of the day in wet uniform!
Students have said that the best part is the Green Screen, learning
how to use the equipment has been a great experience. They‟ve
worked very well together to make sure the filming and technical parts
get done. A great big thank you to Mr Watson for his help also.
Here are a few of the interviews from different students:
Hannah said, “I found the experience interesting, it gave me a chance to see what a news reporter does, and I
really enjoyed it”.
Jordan said, “It‟s something different to do and I‟m enjoying it. It makes a change to the week”.
We also interviewed some of the staff and they have said:
It took a while for everyone to get used to the controls but soon the students were all racing each
other round the track! The track was marked out with cones and if a student hit a cone they were
disqualified from the race so students had to pay attention to where they were going (especially
when turning a corner). Some students then got to experience what it feels like to try to control a
vehicle whilst intoxicated. They wore „beer goggles‟ which have special lenses in them that mimic
the effects of being drunk. While students were wearing them they hit a lot more cones, despite
riding cautiously.
One student said that wearing the beer goggles was „scary!‟ and that „after trying the beer goggles I will
never attempt to drive a car or ride a bike drunk when I am older.‟ The students all enjoyed their KMX-ing
experience and would like to say a huge thank you to the Extreme Wheel team for coming in to school and
running the session with them.

“BBC School Report is a real opportunity for the students to engage with the real world and make a positive
contribution. You never know, we might have the next Trevor McDonald in our midst!”.
Miss Hockley, Performance Faculty Leader
“I feel that the BBC News School Report activity is beneficial to students as it encourages them to
become involved in various aspects of the media. It raises student awareness of potential career paths
from a relatively young age, which I think is important for aiding student identification of career direction.
The event also encourages students to become involved in English related activities, which can only be
a good thing”.
Mrs Lloyd is very proud of her students as they have participated very well on the day. We would like to
say a very big thank you to her as the day wouldn‟t have happened if it wasn‟t for her! She said: “It is a
pleasure to work with the students. It is an exciting day for all of us. We always look
forward to the seeing the final cut!”
On Tuesday, 4th February Heritage High School Key Stage 3
students took part in the Center Parcs National Schools
Championships County Badminton finals at Etwall, Derby.
Each round of the finals consists of 2 games of singles and 3
games of doubles.
Luca Baker, Oliver Seston, Owen Lester and Bradley Childs
made up the Key Stage 3 Boys‟ Team, representing
Bolsover District. They were in Pool A playing against
Ecclesbourne School, John Port School and Lady Manners
School. The team played really well but unfortunately lost all
three rounds. It did however give the team a great
opportunity to play against high ranking Derbyshire players.
The Key Stage 3 girls‟ team, also representing Bolsover District, was Ellie Wheatley, Ellie Bytheway, Olivia Palmer, Chloe Watson and Leonie
Robinson. They too were in pool A and played against Long Eaton School and Brookfield School.
The girls fared rather better and made it through to the semi-finals to play against Ecclesbourne School. Unfortunately they didn‟t win that round but
came overall 3rd.
Congratulations to all the players who took part, your sportsmanship was second to none. You are a credit to yourselves, your families and the school.
Special mention must be made of Ellie Wheatley who won all her singles matches.

Heritage
School’s first
ever Science Fair
goes off with a
bang!
Science Teacher Miss Moorhouse and
70 student, science gurus spent two
weeks preparing their own kitchen
chemistry experiments in order to host
the school‟s first ever Science Fair during National Science and Engineering Week.
Their aim was to inspire and encourage other students to get involved with the
experiments; to get them asking questions about how things work and to try the
experiments themselves at home.
There were all manner of experiments
ranging from cool Cartesian divers to
shocking static electricity; mesmerising
magnets to excellent egg tricks. Members
of 8a/sc3 made a display about the
scientists of today as they wanted to dispel
the current scientist stereotypes that we
have of old men with crazy hair!
The week was a great success, well done
to 9b/sc2, 8b/sc2 and 8a/sc3. Special
thanks to the team of science technicians
who made sure it all ran smoothly.
Hopefully we will make an even bigger
bang next year!
