Finding yourself is difficult at any age, but for high school junior Gavin Gray, she realized that even being yourself is an unfathomably large task. Naturally born a male, Gray is not only a stunning performer but a voice for the transgender community, providing others the hope that they do not have to undergo the transition alone. We had the opportunity to sit down with Gray about her inspiring work, feminism, and future goals!

J: Hey Gavin! So I’d like to begin this interview by talking about what seems like everyone uses now: social media. How has social media impacted you personally?

G: Hi Julia! Social media is a place that brings together so many different people in the world. It’s important for the transgender community to stay united, especially because there are so many things against us.

Author’s note: social media is a leading cause of bullying for the transgender community. According to statistics from NoBullying.org, 67% of all transgender people admit to being bullied online.

J: Definitely. As you embarked on your journey to become who you truly were meant to be, what was that process like? What were some of the reactions you received?

G: It was difficult. My parents were two star athletes. I was obviously born as a male, but I wanted to do different things than sports.I was interested in Barbies and theater. When I came out and admitted I liked guys, it was difficult. It affects you and everyone else, and the way they talk to you.
