When a better look is needed, the doctor may choose to bring out an anoscope
(a lighted tube that is inserted into the anus) for a more thorough look of the
rectal area. Usually done in the doctor’s office, this simple procedure may be a
bit embarrassing, but doesn’t cause much (if any) discomfort.
T h e P r o c t o s c o p e
If a detailed look of the rectum is needed, a proctoscope may be used. This
allows the physician to see the entire rectum and what may be growing inside of
it.
A S i g m o i d o s c o p y
Also performed in a doctor’s office, the sigmoidoscopy involves the insertion of a
long tube into the rectum with a light and camera attached. This allows the
doctor to view the lower part of the colon.
A C o l o n o s c o p y
If a more severe issue is suspected, than the doctor may order a colonoscopy,
which is performed in a hospital setting under some type of anesthesia. This
