How Is Down Syndrome Diagnosed Prenatally?
There are two types of tests for Down syndrome that can be done before a
baby is born. They are screening tests and diagnostic tests.
The screening tests include blood test and ultrasound (sonogram). There are
newly invented prenatal screens which detect chromosomal material from
the fetus that is circulating in the maternal blood. Chorionic villus sampling
(CVS) and amniocentesis are also very useful diagnostic procedures for
diagnosis of Prenatal Down’s syndrome. Most often these tests show accurate
results.
