in Sochi, Russia. It was the first time that the Russian Federation hosted the Winter Games since
the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Games in
Moscow. Sochi has a population of 400,000 people and it is located in Krasnodar, which is the third
largest region in Russia. Sochi was selected as the host city in July 2007, during the 119th
International Olympic Committee (IOC) session held in Guatemala City
The Games were organized in two clusters: a coastal cluster for ice events in Sochi, and a
mountain cluster which is located in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains. The mountain cluster which
located in Krasnaya Polyana was well planned area to all the skiing and sliding sports.
The Sochi Olympic Park was built along the Black Sea coast in the Imeretinskaya Valley,
where all the ice venues had been built anew for the 2014 Games.
The first 3 places won by Russian Federation, Norway and Canada.
The opening ceremony of the winter Olympic games took place on 7 th of February 2014.
More than 3,000 people from various artistic groups participated in dance, acrobatic and circus
performances during the opening ceremony which was watched by a 40,000 big audience at
Sochi's Fisht Olympic Stadium. Most people appreciated it and still they talk about it.
