AUGMENTINE Augmentin (trade name by GlaxoSmithKline) is a combined antibiotic use to treat bacterial infections like pneumonia and sinusitis. It is a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin is a cognate of ampicillin. Clavulanate is a beta lactamase inhibitor. Clavulanate potassium fights against bacteria that are resistant to penicillin drugs and other antibiotics. Route of administration- oral and intravenous (but not so popular) Available as - Augmentin 250 ( amoxicillin 250mg+ clavulanic acid 125 mg) tablets, chewable and powder for oral suspension. Other analog drugs for amoxicillin/clavulanic acid - Clavamox (by Pfizer), Tyclav (by Beximco Pharma). Indications of augmentin – respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections & dental infections. If you are allergy to cephalosporins, if you have liver diseases, mononucleosis or any kidney disease you should avoid taking this drug.
