Another architectural oeuvre d’ art is the impressive underground railway station of Monaco, situated deep inside the hard stone mountain. The first Gare de Monaco was inaugurated in 1867. At that time, there were two stations, Monaco( today’ s location) and Monte Carlo. Trains travelling from Nice to Ventimiglia passed directly through the center of Monte Carlo on rails laid in an open trench, literally cutting the country in half. Prince Rainier III suggested moving the railroad under a special covering so that it could be built on. In the 1950’ s, a new line was laid behind Monte Carlo, causing the closure of the station and the renaming of the central station, Monaco / Monte Carlo. In the early 1990s, it was decided to re-route the railway underground and build a new station. Construction commenced in 1993, and the new station opened on 7 December 1999. This architectural feat comprises a curved tunnel 466 metres in length, 22 metres wide and 13 metres in height. There are three tracks through the station, accessed from a side platform on the south side, and an island platform between the two tracks to the north. Creating the underground station and underground rail lines recuperated as much as four acres of land for the principality. The beautiful railway line runs along the seaside of the Côte d’ Azur and enters a wide tunnel when it approaches the city. The platforms were made for the longest trains, so it takes about 15 minutes to walk from one end to the other.
