Bullying has always been around . Going back to our school years , we ’ ve either been bullied , witnessed or initiated it . Some of us have alternately been through all of the above stages . Bullying or victimizing , however , has only taken on a truly ‘ universal scale ’ with the advent of the Internet . Not incidentally , these days we hear more and more about this phenomenon . It may be solely psychological or emotional , but it may also become physical , hurting people .

Why is it so common ? Homogeneous groups of the same age or gender naturally foster this kind of phenomenon , triggered by their own dynamics . If left unattended , they spontaneously ‘ sort themselves out ’ taking on different roles : ringleaders , scapegoats , specta-
tors or even backstabbers , like the ‘ Jungle Book ’ jackals . Bullying is typically initiated by either ‘ popular ’ people at the top or their opposites , trying to assert themselves .
There is no logic to it , anyone may be a potential victim : whether you are too fat or skinny , a stammerer or a redhead , too smart or a ‘ dumb scumbag ’. Its ‘ intensity ’ has to do with the bullies ’ mood , character , goals , victim ’ s and audience ’ s reaction . But the point is always the same : assert your power by victimizing someone else .
If teachers , supervisors or other grownups in charge do not interfere with the process , do not make a point of changing these patterns , bullying is unavoidable . If weeds are not uprooted , they take over the rest of the garden .
