В 1895 году мест- ные отельеры предложили муниципали- тету провести парад (corso, «шествие» по- итальянски). С 1896 года парад в Ментоне стал стабильно привлекать обеспеченную публику, что позволило городу обрести репутацию престижного и комфортного зимнего курорта. В то время было модным проводить зиму в мягком климате Лазурно- го берега. Короли, принцы и артистическая элита часто посещали Ментон и даже стро- или там великолепные резиденции. НА СЦЕНЕ ПОЯВЛЯЕТСЯ… ЛИМОН К ак и почему фестиваль в Ментоне стал носить самое «цитрусовое» название и сохранил эту уникаль- ную традицию через десятки лет? Дело в том, что в Ницце, которая, как известно, недалеко от Ментона, каждую зиму про- водился старинный и очень популярный карнавал. Так что мэрии Ментона, кото- рая мечтала также привлекать на свой фестиваль множество туристов, нужно было каким-то образом придать ему не- повторимый местный колорит. В те годы Ментон являлся крупнейшим производи- телем лимонов в Европе. Так что вполне логично, что в конечном итоге в 1934 году был официально зарегистрирован Празд- ник лимона (Fête du Citron®). Предприим- чивые владельцы местных отелей приш- ли к городским властям с новой идеей, а именно: организовать выставку цитрусо- вых и цветов в садах Hôtel Menton Riviera. За проектирование каркасов для скуль- птур из цитрусовых и оформление цве- точных участков взялся Франсуа Феррье (François Ferrié). Тогда-то на свет и начали появляться поражающие воображение
