The government has issued guidelines to regulate the cost of various health services in private and public hospitals. The new guidelines which will be implemented by the Ministry of Health are meant to cushion patients from high cost of treatment.

The legal notice, The Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board Act,( Cap. 253) published in August in the Kenya Gazette is the first legally binding document to be in the public domain.
The comprehensive list, which includes charges for consultations, maternity, transplants, postmortem, amputations, dentistry and others, is targeted at protecting Kenyans and health professionals from unfair business practices.
According to the Kenya Medical and Practitioners and Dentists Board( KMPDB) Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Yumbya, the document will not only help patients seeking medical services understand what the maximum amount of fees they can pay for various charges but also use the document as grounds for litigation.
“ We have had guidelines in form of booklets that hospitals and the board have been using but they were not available to the public,” said Mr. Yumbya.
He explained that with the new publication, medical charges are now in the public domain.
The 81-page document specifies a range of fees that hospitals and medical practitioners are allowed to charge patients per service offered.
It was drawn up by the Ministry of Health, in conjunction with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
