The day is always a happy occasion
and seems to encourage good weather.
This is helpful for the number of people
who decide a swim would be a good way
to start the New Year. It also enhances the
view of the club boats in the bay, many
dressed with flags and decorations.

New Year’s Day Event

If you have attended the HHYC Boxing Day Quiz at Yau
Ley Restaurant you are no doubt one of those hardy souls
who have also continued the party on New Year’s Day by
travelling to the HHYC barbecue at Hap Mun Beach.
Every first day of January, Hebe sailors and friends
head across to Hap Mun Beach. Some sail or motor, whilst
others take the Fraser Doig. At the beach, club staff set up
barbecues and manage a sampan service between boats
and the quay.
It is a great opportunity to meet up with many friends and
share a toast to the New Year. People take the time to snooze
on the sand in recovery from the previous night whilst around
the barbecue pits people share recipes and food cooking
techniques. Many families get together to build sandcastles
and share childcare, enjoying the day after the night before!

By four o’clock everyone is ready for beach games. Running
races, wheelbarrow races, three-legged races and egg and
spoon races are part of the programme for children and
adults. One of the highlights is the egg-throwing competition
where partners throw and catch eggs whilst moving further
apart. As eggs break on the beach or on the competitors,
eventually a team is victorious, throwing their egg the furthest
distance across the beach.
The final event is the tug-of-war involving everyone on the
beach: best-of-three pulls across the beach. Then, as the
sun sets, everyone packs up and ambles back to the boats
and home to Hebe.
So, this year put the New Year’s Day barbecue on your
calendar. Come and enjoy good company and food. Transport
is available from the Club, or bring your own boat. Barbecue
packs can be ordered from the Club or bring your own picnic.
This is the perfect opportunity to finish up those mince pies
and Christmas cake.
See you there: 1 January 2014, Hap Mun Beach.
