Hebe Race Week
Words Donna Warren
Volunteer Coordinator (Derek & Hannah’s mum)
Wow, what a week! Thirty Optimist and Pico sailors, ranging
in age from seven to 13 years old, completed 13 full races
out in Shelter Bay, Sai Kung.
There was training in the mornings, racing in the afternoons
and fun and games into the evenings.
Guest national racing coach Raphael Di Donna from
Uruguay took up the challenge to provide the race team
with his wealth of expertise, and I think all who watched and
those that sailed will agree the improvement over the past
nine days has been huge.
A big thank you to Raphael.
On Monday evening the weather was gorgeous for our BBQ
and beach games at Trio until after dark, with the final—British
Bulldog (including parents)—held under the lights. A very
sandy trip home!
On Tuesday evening we were treated to HHYC’s own
Peter Austin telling us how he started his sailing journey
on Optimists at the age of seven at HHYC and went on to
compete in the Youth America’s Cup for Team GB. What an
incredible journey of an amazing young man and a fabulous
inspiration to all our young sai
