The fleet was divided into three divisions: Division A comprising IRC
boats, ranging from the Farr 40 Ramrod to Taxi, one of the Impalas;
Division A2 with the faster HKPN boats which would complete the
long course; and Division B with the slower HKPN yachts which did
the short course.
The different divisions had separate starts, all with a short beat to a
windward mark. Stella elected to put a spinnaker up for the short
reach towards Cape D’Aguilar and managed to stay low enough
to escape the wind shadow close in to the shore. Much of the rest
of the fleet got sucked up into this light patch while trying to cut the
corner meaning that Stella had a handy lead past Cape D’Ag and
the start of the long beat to Sai Kung. Ramrod was managing to sail
higher and faster than Stella and passed us near South Ninepins.
We chose to tack inside Trio, which initially looked like the favoured
route, however Ramrod got into a good vein of pressure which she
carried up Port Shelter to be the first to drop off.
