Green H2 underground storage project moves forward
Exploration started for Bukotermal / Kutnjak geothermal project
WSP USA has been awarded the engineering , procurement , and construction management ( EPCM ) contract for the ACES Delta underground storage facility in Utah , USA , which will consist of two large salt caverns capable of holding a total of 11,000 metric tons of hydrogen . ACES Delta is a joint venture between Magnum Development and Mitsubishi Power . The contract awarded to WSP is for the underground storage portion and related surface facilities of the Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub to build the largest green hydrogen production and storage facility . The ACES Delta project involves converting renewable power into green hydrogen that can be stored in commercial-scale solution mined
caverns . When completed , it will provide 100 % clean energy seasonal storage capabilities , thereby deploying technologies and strategies essential to a decarbonized future for the western U . S . power grid . The hub will produce up to 100 metric tonnes per day of green hydrogen from renewable energy using electrolysis . Green hydrogen is then to be stored in two massive salt caverns , each capable of storing 150 GWh of energy , which is equivalent to 40,000 MW of lithium-ion batteries . The long-duration energy storage capability of the salt caverns will help improve resource adequacy and decrease costs by capturing excess renewable power when it is abundant and dispatching it back on the grid when it is needed .
Geothermal developer Bukotermal has started investigative work on the Kutnjak-1 geothermal well , in which the County of Varazdin and the Municipality of Mali Bukovec are jointly investing HRK 19M ( EUR 2.5M ). Oil-mining works measuring static pressure and temperature at the Kutnjak-1 borehole are performed by experts from the Zagreb company Crosco , and the client is the company Bukotermal , owned by Varazdin County and the Municipality of Mali Bukovec , founded to exploit the potential of geothermal energy in the east of Varazdin County . The company is currently in the phase of exploration works , which include investigations of geothermal potential and works of examination and testing of existing wells , such as the aforementioned Kutnjak-1 .
The mayor of the municipality of Mali Bukovec , Darko Markovic , explained that the Kutnjak-1 and Lunjkovec-1 wells will be overhauled in the fall , as well as a detailed examination of both wells during the overhaul . In the second phase , five additional wells would be drilled , three production wells , and two injection wells , to which a new power plant of 10-12 MW could be connected . In the third phase , the heat from one and the other geothermal power plant would be used , which would be used by farmers , so that heat pipes would be drawn from the power plant to the greenhouses and greenhouses , which would heat the areas where they produce flowers and vegetables during the winter period .
Steam generators installed at unit 2 of China ’ s Zhangzhou NPP
China National Nuclear Corporation ( CNNC ) has said all three ZH-65 steam generators ( SGs ) had been installed for the Hualong One reactor at unit 2 of the Zhangzhou NPP in Fujian province . The SG installation took five days and the lifting into place of the second steam generator took just 2 hours and 54 minutes , “ setting a new record in the history of nuclear power ”. At Zhangzhou NPP , two Chinesedesigned Hualong One reactors are under construction . China ’ s Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued construction licenses for Zhangzhou 1 & 2 in 2019 to CNNC-Guodian Zhangzhou Energy Company , the owner of the Zhangzhou NPP , which was established in 2011 . It is owned by CNNC ( 51 %) and China Guodian Corporation ( 49 %). The licenses are valid for 10 years . The units are scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2024 and 2025 . CNNC said the ZH-65 SG is the first domestic third-generation nuclear power steam generator with completely independent intellectual property rights in China . All six SGs were installed at units 1 & 2 using the “ main equipment first-introduction method ”, also known as the open top method . This involves a large crawler crane lifting the main equipment into the reactor building before the dome is put in place .
