Imperial awards hydrogen contract to Air Products
Imperial has announced a longterm contract with Air Products ( APD ) to supply low-carbon hydrogen for Imperial ’ s proposed renewable diesel complex at its Strathcona refinery near Edmonton , Alberta . Air Products will provide pipeline supply from its hydrogen plant under construction in Edmonton . Imperial will use Air Products ’ low-carbon hydrogen to produce renewable diesel at Strathcona that substantially reduces greenhouse gas emissions relative to conventional production . The hydrogen and biofeedstock will be combined with a proprietary catalyst to produce premium low-carbon diesel fuel . Air Products is increasing overall
investment in its Edmonton hydrogen facility to CAD 1.6bn to support the Imperial contract . The additional investment by Air Products will be used to facilitate integration with Imperial ’ s proposed project which is expected to enable further significant emissions reductions at Air Products ’ overall complex . Air Products will supply Strathcona with approximately 50 percent of the low-carbon hydrogen output from the 165 million standard cubic feet per day hydrogen production complex . Imperial ’ s renewable diesel complex is expected to produce more than 1 billion litres per year of renewable diesel from locally sourced feedstocks . First
announced in August 2021 , the project is anticipated to realize about 3 million tonnes per year in emissions reductions in the Canadian
transportation sector , which is estimated to be the equivalent of taking more than 650,000 vehicles off the road annually .
Wärtsilä signs two-year agreement with Nature Energy
The technology group Wärtsilä has signed a two-year tailored Service Agreement with Denmark-based Nature Energy , an operator of biogas upgrading facilities . The agreement covers six existing biogas plants in various parts of Denmark , all of which feature
Wärtsilä biogas upgrading technology ( Puregas ). The agreement was signed in July 2022 . Special features of the agreement include an annual safety check , a know-how service that analyses operations to provide recommendations and advice , and 24 / 7 remote monitoring support . The operational performance , efficiency , and reliability of the six plants are enhanced through a combination of these features , together with planned maintenance . “ We have great respect for Wärtsilä ’ s expertise and knowledge in the field of biogas upgrading , and for the technology on which these plants operate . It was natural , therefore , we enter into this agreement with them to ensure continuous optimal performance ,” commented Povl Erik Røen , Operations Manager , Nature Energy . “ Nature Energy is a major player in the European biogas upgrading market , and we are extremely pleased to strengthen our ongoing cooperation with them ,” said Johan Friis , Renewable Service Sales Manager , Wärtsilä Gas Solutions .
Excess heat from green hydrogen production to heat Danish homes
European Energy ’ s planned Power-to-X plant in Esbjerg , Denmark , is expected to start supplying green hydrogen to the Port of Esbjerg in the first half of 2023 . The surplus heat from hydrogen production will be used to heat the equivalent of 200 average households . The Power-to-X ( PtX ) plant will produce green hydrogen for ships docked in the harbor of Esbjerg as well as for industrial customers in Denmark . Multi-utility company DIN Forsyning has entered into an agreement with European Energy to take the excess heat from production . This surplus heat will be able to heat the equivalent of 200 average households in the start-up phase . The PtX plant will be connected directly to the large wind turbines in Måde , thus running 100 % on local green electricity .
McDermott selected by Tata Steel for Heracless Project
McDermott International has been selected by Tata Steel IJmuiden B . V . to be part of an Integrated Project Management Team ( IPMT ) to shape and manage the execution of project Heracless ( hydrogen era , carbonless ). The project is located at Tata Steel ’ s facilities in IJmuiden , 19 miles ( 30 km ) east of Amsterdam . The project is focused on the implementation of Direct Reduced Iron Plant ( DRP ) and Reducing Electrical Furnace ( REF ) technology at the facility as the basis for Tata Steel ’ s sustainable hydrogen-based steel production . Work on the project will be executed from McDermott ’ s center of excellence in The Hague , the Netherlands , and Tata Steel ’ s facilities in IJmuiden .
Backblaze contracts 1MW of capacity at Nautilus ’ s floating data center
Backblaze , a cloud backup and storage provider has expanded its data center portfolio by contracting 1MW of capacity at Nautilus ’ s floating data center in Stockton , California . Launched last year , Nautilus ’ s 7MW Stockton facility lives on a barge ,
enabling it to take advantage of naturally cooled water . The barge takes in external water , holding it for ~ 15 seconds to transfer heat to it from an internal closed loop of pure water via a heat exchanger . The water leaves the CDU around 4 ° F / 2.5 ° C warmer .
“ We are challenging some of the world ’ s biggest technology companies with Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage and Computer Backup , so efficiency and innovation are central to our success . Working with Nautilus is exciting because they are clearly committed to these same ideals ,” said Gleb Budman , CEO , and Chairperson of Backblaze . “ We are excited to have Backblaze on board ,” said Rob Pfleging , the recently appointed CEO of Nautilus . “ By partnering , we can help support their growth in a sustainable way . With our data center solutions focused on advanced cooling and power efficiency , Backblaze will not only be able to reduce their environmental impact but also lower their total cost of ownership all while continuing to meet the high demands of their growing customer base .”
