Nathan Jones is the Heatric Services Sales Manager at Parker Hannifin Filtration Group, specialising in maximising uptime and operational performance for Printed Circuit Heat Exchangers( PCHEs). Since joining Parker in 2022, Nathan applies his technical experience and background in marine operations to energy facilities operating across the North Sea, Africa and beyond.
Managing this risk requires a unique combination of technical understanding and strategic planning. Critical components must be identified, their behaviour understood, and mitigation strategies developed in advance. For heat exchangers, this involves analysing not only performance metrics but also the unique regional and process-specific causes of degradation. Failure investigation provides valuable insight. By identifying root causes of past failures, operators can refine operating conditions and maintenance practices to reduce the likelihood of recurrence. This creates a feedback loop that supports continuous improvement and strengthens overall system resilience. At the same time, intervention must be balanced against operational continuity. Excessive maintenance can introduce its own risks, particularly in environments where access is limited. The challenge lies in identifying the point at which intervention delivers the greatest benefit without undermining production.
A new operating reality Offshore operations are entering a phase where unit life is becoming less defined. The pressures on existing assets are unlikely to diminish, and expectations of performance will continue to increase. In this environment, asset stewardship brings together engineering expertise, operational discipline,

and strategic planning to maintain reliability under conditions that offer little margin for failure. PCHEs illustrate this shift towards proactive maintenance. They deliver performance advantages that are difficult to achieve with conventional technologies, but also require a more delicate, planned approach to lifecycle management. Their role within offshore systems reflects a broader move toward design-led strategies that prioritise long-term stability. Operators are therefore confronted with a simple but demanding reality. The assets may be ageing, but expectations are not. Managing that gap is now central to asset stewardship in high pressure offshore environments.
