Dr. Scott MacKenzie appointed IFHTSE Honorary President
The Executive Committee has decided to award Dr. Scott MacKenzie the Honorary Presidency“ In recognition of his exceptional and enduring service to IFHTSE, far exceeding duties as President, his interconnecting role in the global heat treatment community, his significant technical contributions, and his generous mentorship to generations of professionals.” This is an exceptional honour for exceptional service. In its more than fifty years of existence,
IFHTSE has appointed only three Honorary Presidents. He is now the fourth. He will receive the award during the opening ceremony of the 31st IFHTSE World Congress in Cologne, Germany, on October 13, 2026. Scott served on the IFHTSE executive committee for six years following his term as President of IFHTSE( 2018 – 2019), and between 2012 and 2025 he organized and chaired, with much personal commitment no less than five IFHTSE conferences.
He was a constant supporter of IFHTSE within the ASM Heat Treating Society, and with his service as a hub, he kept the relationship between IFHTSE and ASM alive and working. In uncountable occasions, he carried findings from the international community to the US and vice versa, establishing numerous new co-operations. Likewise, he took care of the membership of Quaker Houghton in IFHTSE from the beginning and organized their sponsoring of all the plaques for IFHTSE awards.
Cardiff Heat Network recognised with national‘ Scheme of the Year’ award
Cardiff Heat Network has been named‘ Heat Network Scheme of the Year.’ The award from the UK District Energy Association( UKDEA) recognises the groundbreaking project’ s role in cutting carbon emissions and setting a new benchmark for sustainable energy infrastructure in Wales. Presented at the UKDEA Awards ceremony in London, the award celebrates heat network projects that demonstrate innovation, overcome significant delivery challenges and set standards for others to follow. Cardiff Heat Network, which harnesses heat that already exists as a by-product of waste processing procedures and would otherwise go to waste, provided its first heat in November 2025. It now supplies buildings across Cardiff
Bay and Butetown, including the Scott Harbour council-owned apartments, Cardiff and Vale College, Nelson House, Tresillian House, and Butetown Community Centre. The network is now entering its next phase of development, with plans to integrate underground pipework alongside Cardiff’ s Crossrail tram project at Callaghan Square, so that buildings in the city centre can benefit from low-carbon heat in the years ahead.
Nordic Climate Group expands Irish network with Donegal acquisition
Nordic Climate Group continues to grow in Ireland through the acquisition of Northern Refrigeration Services, a Donegal-based specialist in refrigeration, heat pumps and heating solutions. Founded in 1965 and led by Gerald McGloin since 1997, the company has deep roots in the northwest of Ireland and a long tradition of technical know-how. Northern Refrigeration Services works across both commercial and domestic environments, supporting customers ranging from hotels and data centres to pubs, factories, warehouses and residential properties. Alongside service and maintenance, the company has strong experience delivering large-scale projects, including heat pump installations and residential developments. Northern Refrigeration Services will continue to operate under its existing local brand and leadership as part of Nordic Climate Group.
Today, Northern Refrigeration Services is a specialist team of nine employees, combining long experience with practical problem-solving in service, maintenance and installation. Its work supports customers who depend on reliable heating and cooling systems in their daily operations, from local businesses and residential properties to more demanding commercial environments.
Xiulin Ruan receives ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award
Xiulin Ruan, professor of mechanical engineering, has received the Heat Transfer Memorial Award from ASME( American Society of Mechanical Engineers). The Heat Transfer Memorial Award is bestowed on individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of heat transfer through teaching, research, practice, design, service, leadership, and inventions. It functions as a“ lifetime achievement award” within the heat transfer community. Ruan was recognized“ for the development of original theoretical and computational methods for atomistic and nanoscale heat transfer; for discovering novel heat transfer physics; and for inventions of thermal technologies
that have generated significant societal impact and commercial interest.” Ruan studies a broad range of topics related to heat transport, nanotechnology, and machine learning. In 2012, he and Ph. D. student Tianli Feng( now assistant professor at the University of Washington) started tackling fourphonon scattering, a phenomenon that is fundamental to how a material conducts heat. They spent two years establishing the general formulation of four-phonon scattering, and another two years developing its computational method and predicting the importance of four-phonon scattering on thermal conductivity at high temperatures. In 2016, they finally reported these findings in a groundbreaking paper on four-phonon scattering. In
2017, they published an influential further study, where they extended the method to first principles and predicted an unexpected strong
impact of four-phonon scattering on a high thermal conductivity semiconductor called boron arsenide, even at room temperature.
