and regional heat ,” explains Michael Strebl , Chairman of the Wien Energie Management Board . Wien Energie is investing around 70 million euros in the first expansion stage , which is now completed and operational . By the next step in 2027 , three additional plants will be added to the current three constructed heat pumps . Once fully expanded , Wien Energie will generate district heating with a capacity of 110 megawatts at this location .
Significant expansion for green electricity Normally , the sewage from the sewage treatment plant flows into the Danube Canal after purification . From now on , the water takes a detour to the large heat pump plant : there , the heat pumps , equipped with heat exchangers , extract about six degrees Celsius from the purified water . Wien Energie can use this low temperature with modern technology in the highly complex plant to generate heat of over 90 degrees Celsius . This heat then flows in the form of hot water through the district heating network into tens of thousands of Viennese apartments supplied with district heating . In this way , Wien Energie utilizes the valuable thermal energy in the purified wastewater that has remained unused so far . Wien Energie obtains the green electricity for operating the plant directly from the nearby VERBUND Danube power plant Freudenau . For the efficient and optimal operation of the heat pump , Wien Energie has installed its own direct line between the power plant and the facility . A separate branching point was built at the power plant for this purpose . From there , the electricity flows through the approximately one-kilometre-long line to the heat pump . This way , all the energy used comes directly from the surroundings and is used for the heating of Viennese residents .
New pump station for district heating network In order to distribute these large amounts of heat in the district heating network , Wien Energie has also erected a new district heating pump station . There is now a second pump station at the Simmering power plant site that pumps up to 7,500 cubic metres of hot water per hour through the district heating network , similar to a heart . This new pump station can distribute not only the heat from the heat pumps at the sewage treatment plant but also additional capacities . This is necessary because the district heating network in Vienna is continuously growing . Today , the Vienna district heating network , with over 1,300 kilometres in length , is one of the largest in Europe . Wien Energie supplies 440,000 Viennese households and 7,800 major customers with district heating . By 2040 , Wien Energie aims to supply around 56 percent of Viennese households with climate-neutral district heating .
