Uniper and Evonik launch high-temp heat pump
Uniper and Evonik are commissioning a highly innovative high-temperature heat pump that supplies district heating to around 1,000 households in the Ruhr region. The system is installed at Evonik’ s Herne site and is operated with support from Iqony, with Uniper responsible for financing, planning, installation, and operation. The heat pump captures lowtemperature industrial waste heat from Evonik’ s chemical production processes, where cooling water is typically warmed to around 25 – 30 ° C. Instead of being rejected via cooling towers, this waste heat is upgraded by the heat pump to temperatures of up to 130 ° C, making it suitable for injection into an existing district heating network. The system delivers up to 1.5 MW of thermal output. This marks the first installation in Germany capable of raising industrial waste heat by more than 100 ° C at megawatt scale, addressing a key limitation of conventional heat pump technology and enabling integration with high-temperature district heating systems. The project is expected to avoid approximately 1,750 tons of CO 2 emissions annually by replacing fossil fuel-based heat generation. It also improves energy efficiency at the Evonik site by reducing electricity consumption associated with cooling towers. The initiative has a pilot character, with Uniper, Evonik, and Iqony evaluating potential scale-up opportunities. In the future, up to 20 MW of additional industrial waste heat could be integrated into the system. The project supports Evonik’ s broader decarbonisation strategy and demonstrates the potential of industrial waste heat recovery to contribute to climate-neutral urban energy systems.
