Our cover story this month explores the exceptional work of Alleima’ s R & D Tube Division, where innovation and sustainability go hand-in-hand. From hydrogen-ready stainless steels and high-temperature alloys to intelligent simulation tools like“ Alleima Guru,” their integrated approach bridges material science with customer-specific application needs. As Eva Lindh-Ulmgren, Vice President of R & D, puts it:“ We are here to solve the unsolvable.” Discover how these“ hidden heroes” are shaping the materials of tomorrow on page 6.
Turning to our end-user focus, we had the pleasure of visiting Heineken’ s largest European brewery in Zoeterwoude, the Netherlands. There, Senior Maintenance Engineer Erik Smit walks us through the brewery’ s strategic journey toward resilience and modernisation. With over 160 tanks and a multitude of heat exchangers, both plate and shell-and-tube, the site showcases an intricate balance between heritage infrastructure and advanced engineering. From corrosion-resistant upgrades to a cutting-edge heat pump project designed to recycle thermal energy from fermentation, this feature( page 14) offers a unique look at how stainless steel and heat transfer innovation are keeping sustainability flowing.
In our technical spotlight, Alexander Gernhardt of Kelvion addresses one of the most pressing topics of our time: thermal management in green hydrogen plants. As electrolyzer capacities scale into the hundreds of megawatts, selecting the right cooling system is far from straightforward. From dry and adiabatic systems to Kelvion’ s innovative cascade cooling solution, this article( page 24) unpacks why tailored solutions are critical to performance, efficiency, and long-term OPEX.
Finally, in a forward-looking technical case study, engineers from PETRONAS present a digital twin-driven predictive maintenance model for cooling water heat exchangers. By using machine learning and HTRI automation, the team has developed a proactive fouling prediction tool that could revolutionize heat exchanger maintenance planning. This model not only prevents unnecessary cleaning and downtime but also represents a step toward fully data-integrated thermal systems. Read more about this fascinating initiative on page 30.
We hope this issue leaves you inspired by the many ways innovation is moving our industry forward.
Stay cool and enjoy the read!
