It was many years in the making , but on 1 st & 2 nd November the European heat exchanger community finally came together in Rotterdam ! Held at the RDM former submarine yard , the venue was the perfect setting for an industrious atmosphere ; visitors to the conference room and expo hall alike were treated to views of freight barges and large trade ships coursing along the trade artery of the Nieuwe Maas river , and water taxis made for a unique morning commute .
The conference began with a few words of welcome from Heat Exchanger World Conference Organiser Ellie Pritchard , who thanked all participants for their patience , loyalty , and enthusiasm throughout the years of preparation . In particular , the event sponsor Alleima gave unwavering support from the beginning to ensure that the Heat Exchanger World European event could adapt to all Covid-related postponements and challenges . What followed was a well-rounded conference covering the key issues and challenges in the heat exchanger industry and supply chain . Input came from technical individuals such as engineers and EPC contractors , as well as service providers and manufacturers . A clear overview of the heat exchanger community demonstrated the willingness for collaboration across the industry , with a general acknowledgment of its current conservatism and need for change .
Key discussion points : The most prevalent talking points throughout the conference sessions were the following :
• Acknowledging the current conservative approach of the heat exchanger industry and the need for a more open platform for exploring new ideas and solutions , especially in the context of a global energy transition
• Various emerging technologies and applications , such as decarbonisation and hydrogen production
• Issues surrounding design standardisation and challenges posed to welders
• Change in lifecycle trends – Many end users now look at equipment lifecycle of 5 years rather than 10-15 years
• Convincing end users and EPCs of new designs and technologies
Expo floor : On the expo floor , 60 exhibiting companies welcomed conversation and demonstrations at their stands . Exchanging of cards , ideas , and business plans saw a bustling expo hall in which many commented on the high quality of visitors and positive leads . Being the first European event dedicated to uniting the heat exchanger industry in one place , the exhibition hosted suppliers , manufacturers , service providers and more , and saw the coming together of new contacts and existing friendships . Thanks to the adjoining technical conference , end users and EPC contractors from major companies such as Shell , ExxonMobil , Fatima Fertilizer , Fluor , and McDermott also interacted with companies on the expo floor . The full exhibitor list for the 2022 expo is still available to view on our event website : https :// heat-exchanger-worldeurope . com / exhibition / exhibitor-list /
Key voices : Abdollah Bayati , Senior Process Engineer ( and heat transfer subject matter expert ) for McDermott ( the Netherlands ) gave his thoughts on the premier European event : “ This is a very interesting event , having the conference alongside the exhibition with many engineers from different sectors made the event very useful and practical . It was a great opportunity to exchange knowledge and expertise .”

– Abdollah Bayati , Senior Process Engineer
- McDermott .
Taimoor Asif , Project Engineer for Fatima Fertilizer Company Ltd ( Pakistan ), described the conference as a “ good opportunity to connect with experts and solution providers across the heat exchanger industry . The combination of Conference and Expo provided an avenue of exploring new solutions to conventional problems faced as an end user .” Mark van den Broek , materials and welding engineer at Fluor , commented on one of the key topics over the two days : " There is a lot to gain with heat exchangers these days . The demand in energy efficiency rules out conservative thinking in heat exchanger design . I also see this in all these new innovations in sustainable technologies ."
Networking dinner : On the evening of Tuesday 1 st November , the celebration continued to the SS Rotterdam former cruise ship , for the ticketed Networking Dinner . Welcoming participants of both the Heat Exchanger World and Duplex World events , 180 guests enjoyed an evening of delicious food and graceful entertainment in the ship ’ s impressive ballroom .
