Chicago ’ s Archbishop to Accept Goal Award
Cardinal Blase J . Cupich , Archbishop of Chicago , will accept the Goal Award on May 25 , 2021 , the Feast of St . Madeleine Sophie Barat , foundress of Sacred Heart education . The Schools ’ highest award is given annually by Sacred Heart to an individual or organization whose life and work exemplifies one of the five principles of Sacred Heart education , which are faith , intellect , service , community , and personal growth . This year , Sacred Heart is focusing on Goal I : A personal and active faith in God . Cardinal Cupich will receive the Goal Award in honor of his lifelong service in cultivating a vibrant faith , particularly in Chicago and surrounding areas , and his leadership role within the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops ( USCCB ).
He was appointed by the Vatican as the successor to Cardinal Francis George in 2014 , and in 2016 , Pope Francis elevated him to the College of Cardinals . In 2017 , Cardinal Cupich was appointed to the Congregation for Catholic Education , and in 2020 , to the Vatican Task Force to assist Episcopal Conferences , as well as Religious Congregations and Societies of Apostolic Life , in preparing and updating guidelines for the protection of minors .
Cardinal Cupich , as head of the Archdiocese , leads the Catholic Church in Cook County , which includes metropolitan Chicago , and Lake County ; he is also the head of the Province of Illinois , which includes all the dioceses in the state . He is an executive member of Catholic Mutual Group and Chancellor of the Catholic Church Extension Society as well as the University of St . Mary of the Lake , Mundelein , Illinois . Cardinal Cupich speaks six languages , including English and Spanish .
Each year Sacred Heart focuses on a particular Goal while still upholding the other four . In 2004 , Sacred Heart began to celebrate its mission and the Goals through the bestowing of the Goal Award . This year the award will be given virtually .

Goal I
Schools of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to educate to a personal and active faith in God .
