Paddocks House
Rooms start at £139
Paddocks House is a rural retreat near the horse
racing town of Newmarket. The little sister of
luxury Poets House in Ely, Paddocks was so
new it still smelt of paint when we visited. But
that’s not to say the staff didn’t already have
almost everything down to a T.
In fact, they can’t do enough to make sure you
enjoy your stay, from bringing you a gin and
tonic while you get ready, to running you a
bath while you finish your dinner.
Talking of that bath… in pride of place in
each of the hotel’s 15 rooms – which have a
dark, intimate feel with black satin curtains
and silky bedsheets - is a huge copper tub so
luxurious you’ll probably spend most of your
stay inside it. With modern design sitting
easily alongside existing period features, the
rest of the hotel, which was once lived in by
Lord Bryon’s sister, feels just as grand. It’s an
atmosphere which continues into the dining
room, where Paddocks serves up some really
exceptional, elegant dishes.
