“I get the pleasure of seeing my animals worn in the street…. I never thought that would happen!” “I tried to show the animals with some personality and did that by giving them hats and socks and things….it’s been very popular” says David. “I get the pleasure of seeing my animals worn in the street…. I never thought that would happen!” David’s talents don’t stop there, he was selected as a panel member for a fabric design competition hosted by Central St Martin’s and has also designed an EP cover for ‘Me For Queen’. He is currently working on two private book commissions, a novel and a new range of illustrated homeware, due to launch later this year. As well as all these professional successes and exciting pipeline projects, David is also about to embark on an even bigger journey. “In September I’m going to train to be a primary school teacher” he says. “The way people learn and the way we develop, is really fascinating to me and I feel a great urge to become good at teaching. Perhaps because I have always appreciated how helpful my own mentors have been…I will continue to write and illustrate, and I will be working hard to earn enough to pay for the tuition fees” he says honourably. David is a humble character which comes across in both his work and personality. His stories are a true extension of him. They’re wholesome, whimsical and enchanting. “I hope my stories and drawings take people somewhere they don’t expect to go and are joyful, delightful and imaginative in a way that feels reviving, like good cup of tea or a bath.” Heart Homes 44 www.okdavid.com
