When Helen Desai was invited to dinner by a friend
who was lodging in a house in Crystal Palace, she
felt at home in the property immediately. “I loved
the tree-lined road, the fact it was up high and the
front and back garden being on different levels,”
says the 45-year-old Art Editor of a women’s
magazine.

“I mentioned to the owner that if he ever wanted
to sell it I’d love to buy it, but he said that wasn’t
going to happen. Out of the blue one day he
phoned and asked if I still wanted to buy it, and six
months later I moved in.”
