At first glance , this may appear to be a chicken-and-egg question . It is not . It began with a chronic pain epidemic , and it will be handled by addressing the chronic pain problems of the nation and the opioid crisis that has flowed from the pain crisis . If chronic pain ceased to be a problem today in the United States , like the fallout from a nuclear disaster , we will have issues to clean up from our free-wheeling opioid days for generations to come .
