The Changing Response to Chronic Pain
Analyzing the Voice of the Consumer
The findings ...
A quick Google search will provide us with an unlimited supply of scientific articles , conference proceedings , agency analyses and government reports on the chronic pain and opioid crises in the United States . We have a reasonable idea of what scientists , academics and policymakers think about these circumstances . The perspective of the patient is quite another story .
Life University and Quid , in the face of the opioid reality of the day , teamed up to begin to analyze the voice of the consumer with respect to chronic pain and their needs relative to it . Using natural language processing and machine learning , we have constructed a data-driven view of unmet patient needs by tapping into more than 100,000 de-identified and anonymous public comments that occurred in openly accessible digital media for patients living chronic pain circumstances .
To develop a baseline understanding of the top needs of chronic pain and opioid addiction sufferers , an analysis of more than 100,000 consumer conversations was completed using Quid . From these conversations , eight key patient needs were distilled .
The findings were clear : the biggest patient need was support in determining the most effective chronic pain relief solution for various pain scenarios ( i . e . post-surgery pain , migraine , spine-neck-back pain , fibromyalgia , cancer , etc .). Patients expressed their second biggest need as access to qualified providers . The patient feedback also conveyed a need for insurance coverage for provider services , a desire to create their own care team and a need to navigate the healthcare system efficiently . On an individual consumer basis , as a population , we are left to our own devices to navigate the path out of pain , or at a minimum the path to the better management of pain .
