Academic and Research Communities Are Looking the Wrong Way
The findings ...
An examination of scientific articles published on pain management clearly points out the failure to look both ways . Life University and Quid , a data and language analysis platform , analyzed 10,000 academic articles around pain management published between 2013 and 2018 . Approximately 90 % were pharma-based . Of the non-pharma approaches , cognitive behavioral therapy ( CBT ) was the most well cited and referenced area suggesting the direction that the research community has emphasized to date .

Non-Pharma Based Articles
Having a sense of where the academic and research communities are looking is helpful , especially when contrasted with what the consumer is exploring . The Life University / Quid inquiry was extended into an analysis of 1,499 news and blog articles about pain management that were posted between 2016 and 2018 . Over this three-year period , there has been an increased discussion on the part of consumers around non-pharma pain management , with chiropractic care and yoga being the most popular among the public , while massage garnered the greatest discussion among the media . Within chronic pain management multi-modal care ( multiple strategies in a combination based on individual needs ), implants , stem cell therapies and chiropractic care demonstrated the highest positive sentiment amongst patients . What is “ sentiment analysis ”? Sentiment analysis is the process of computationally identifying and categorizing opinions expressed in a piece of text , especially in order to determine whether the writer ' s attitude toward a particular topic , product , etc . is positive , negative or neutral . Sentiment analysis helps data analysts within large enterprises gauge public opinion , conduct nuanced market research , monitor brand and product reputation and understand customer experiences . An interpretation tip : high positive sentiment is generally what people are after as opposed to its opposite , high negative sentiment .
Only 10 % of the articles were non-pharma based . Of the nonpharma approaches , cognitive behavioral therapy ( CBT ) was the most well cited and referenced area suggesting the direction that the research community has emphasized to date .
[ Sentiment Sidebar ] Curiously , CBT – the most referenced and cited strategy among academics and researchers – was revealed to have a very high negative sentiment amongst consumers .
