FAQs
How was the climate there?
It depended on where you went. Down in the valleys it was HOT but once you go on top of hills and into the mountains, it tended to get cold a lot.
Where did you stay while you were there?
I stayed in a fairly nice hotel. Wasn't a Hilton, or JW Marriott, but it was safe so I was fine loll
Did you see any wild animals while you were there?
I saw a lot of wild chickens loll I actually was followed by one when I was crossing the border from South Africa into Swaziland. But we did go on a Safari on Thanksgiving and we saw Giraffes, a Lion, Elephant, Rhinos, Elk, Deer, and Antelope.
Was your schedule organized for you each day?
Yes partially. We woke up at a certain time, left the hotel at a certain time, ate dinner at a certain time, but we also had free time to experience the culture and interact with people.
What was your favorite part?
Definitely spending time with the students we visited and the kids we saw while doing clinicals. It was a heartwarming experience knowing I was making a difference in someone else's life.
Did you get home sick?
Not at all and I think it's because two of my close friends went along with me. I was having an amazing time I had access to internet so I was able to communicate with my family and my social networks.
What was the food like?
Very different. Their snacks were relatable to actual foods, like roast beef chips, or turkey chips, and a bunch of other distinctive things. A lot of their fruit juices were dairy based I stayed away from those lol. The hotel food was descent for the most part their chicken and fries were AMAZING loll. We spent thanksgiving over there as well so they tried their best to give us a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner because they don't celebrate it there.
What is something you took from the trip?
Being more appreciative of what I have. Compared to what they have I have everything no exaggeration included.
What was the most memorable piece of the trip for you?
The trip itself was memorable, but the first day when we visited Baylor Clinic. All the teens and kids enrolled were HIV positive, and through it all remained full of hope and joy. It doesn't get any better than that to witness that joy.
