Zapata County I.S.D. has partnered with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and their Walk Across Texas program for the 3rd year in a row. Walk Across Texas is one of many programs offered by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s Healthy South Texas initiative which is a comprehensive effort to reduce preventable diseases and their consequences in The Lone Star State. The goal for Walk Across Texas is to walk 832 miles as an individual or as a team. All Zapata County I.S.D. elementary schools will be competing within their own schools to see which grade level will complete the goal and walk the most miles. On January 16, 2018 and January 25, 2018 the elementary schools hosted a Walk Across Texas Kickoff event in collaboration with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.

Healthy South Texas Specialists, Erica Reyes and Elyssa Davis presented about the importance of being physically active and healthy eating. Teachers also joined in the fun and competed in a smoothie bike competition to see who made the best smoothie. Zapata County I.S.D. Child Nutrition Department provided the ingredients for the smoothie bike competitions.

Parents will also be able to add extra miles to their child’s school by joining individually and walking on their own.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension would like to thank all Zapata County I.S.D. administrators who helped organize these successful events. For more information about Walk Across Texas feel free to contact your Zapata Extension Office at (956)765-9820.
