Healthy Lung Month
Canadian Thanksgiving is October 10
Here are some tips you can use to
help keep your lungs healthy.
In Canada, Thanksgiving was moved to the second
Monday in October because after the World Wars,
Remembrance Day (Nov 11) and Thanksgiving kept falling in
the same week.
Similar to the USA, traditions such as parades and
football can be a part of Canadian Thanksgiving. The KitchenerWaterloo Oktoberfest Parade is the most widely-known
Canadian Thanksgiving Day parade and is broadcast nationwide
on CTV. The Canadian Football League holds a nationally
televised doubleheader known as the "Thanksgiving Day
Classic". It is one of two weeks in which the league plays on
Monday afternoons, the other being Labour Day Classic.
The history of Thanksgiving in Canada goes back to an
explorer, Martin Frobisher, who had been trying to find a
northern passage to the Orient. In the year 1578, he held a
formal ceremony in what is now the province of Newfoundland,
to give thanks for surviving the long journey. This feast is
considered by many to be the first Thanksgiving celebration in
North America.

Don't Smoke Anything: This
includes not just cigarettes, but
cigars, pipes, cloves and marijuana.
Clean Air: You can support clean air
laws if you are politically inclined,
but on a personal level, cut
electricity use, drive less and avoid
burning trash.
Exercise More: While exercise itself
won't make your lungs stronger, it
will help them be more efficient at
delivering oxygen.
Keep the House Clean: Fire places,
wood-burning stoves, mold, pet
dander, construction materials and
even some candles and air fresheners
can cause lung problems
with
residents.
Eat Right: Anti-oxidant-rich foods
(like broccoli, kale, cauliflower, etc.)
have been shown to reduce risk of
lung cancer.
Consider Your Career Choice:
Many common jobs (such as
construction, textile manufacturing,
the automotive industry, bartending,
baking and fire fighting) present
elevated risks to lung health that
other fields do not.
At-Home
Products:
Oil-based
paints, cleaning products, home
improvement supplies, each present
certain lung risks. When possible,
wear a mask and use in a wellventilated areas.
United Nations Day is October 24th
United
Nations
Day,
proclaimed in 1948 by the United
Nations General Assembly, is held
annually on October 24, the
anniversary of the coming into force
of the UN Charter on October 24,
1945. United Nations Day is devoted
to making known to peoples of the
world the aims and achievements of
the United Nations Organization.
United Nations Day has traditionally been marked
throughout the world with meetings, discussions and exhibits
about the achievements and goals of the organization. In 1971,
the General Assembly recommended that Member States observe
it as a public holiday. In the US, the President has issued a
proclamation each year for United Nations Day since 1948.
