Nearly 750 million television viewers in 74 countries joined another 250 million on radio to experience the marriage ceremony of Prince Charles , heir to the British throne , to Lady Diana Spencer , a young English schoolteacher , daughter to the 8th Earl Spencer . Married in a grand ceremony at St . Paul ' s Cathedral in the presence of 3,500 guests , the couple ' s post-ceremony procession through the streets of London drew two million spectators lining the route .
Their first child , Prince William , was born in 1982 , and their second , Prince Harry , in 1984 . However , life being what it often is , the couple separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996 .
