On August 6, 1926, Gertrude Ederle successfully swam the English Channel. The Romans gave this month its name in 8 BC, after the first Roman Emperor Augustus who ruled from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. It has 31 days because Augustus wanted as many days as Julius Caesar's month of July had (they took the extra day from February.) August was previously named Sextilis in Latin – it was the sixth month of the Roman calendar. th Aug. 28 , 1898 – Caleb Bradham invented the carbonated soft drink that would later be called “Pepsi-Cola.” th Aug. 29 , 1966 – The Beatles performed their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
