It is a subject I personally keep a close eye on. My mother developed diabetes late in life. All three of my surviving siblings have the disease. My middle brother went into a diabetic coma about 10 years ago – the first inkling we ever had that he had diabetes. But looking back, there were many signs that he was developing the condition. He was always skinny, thirsty and prone to headaches. Our older brother has had several toes amputated due to diabetic neuropathy, and he has that complication where his food digests too slowly. It has put him in the hospital several times. My sister is in constant pain from neuropathy. I am determined not to become the next one in our family to develop diabetes. To that end, I exercise regularly and watch what I eat very carefully. I’ve learned to like sugarless tea. If I do have sweets, I make sure to eat them sparingly and regard them as a special treat. Soda is a once-a-month indulgence. Seeing what my brothers and sister go through is another deterrent to dropping my guard. Reading the articles in this month’s issue of Health&Wellness has only encouraged me further to take better care of myself. I urge you to take charge of your own health and learn more about diabetes – what causes it, what it does and how to control it. Tanya J.
