We take measurements of the blood glucose every two hours throughout the day to see what the blood glucose looks like. At this point, your pet may need a different dose of insulin, depending on what the blood glucose curve finds, or you may be able to stick with the current dose. We do this every one to two weeks until your pet’s diabetes is adequately controlled. Once controlled, we then perform blood glucose curves every three to six months for the rest of your pet’s life. Diabetes Prognosis Prognosis for diabetes depends on many different factors. Diabetes can be very difficult to get under control initially and takes a lot of work and patience from the owner and the veterinarian. If we are diligent about management, always give insulin on time, monitor frequently and control secondary diseases, the prognosis is good and your pet can have a good quality of life with very few symptoms. One complication of diabetes in dogs is the formation of cataracts. Most dogs with diabetes will develop cataracts and go blind. Cataracts can be removed by a veterinary ophthalmologist, but this is very expensive. With prompt treatment and appropriate management, pets can live happily with diabetes. If your pet does not have diabetes and you want to help prevent the onset of diabetes, keeping your pet at an ideal weight through exercise and appropriate diet is important. If your pet shows signs of diabetes, we are currently accepting new clients and offer a free veterinary comprehensive physical exam to any new patient.
