This spongy substance is the tissue inside some of our bones that contain immature cells, called stem cells. Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different types of cell in the body during early life and growth. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell or a brain cell. In addition, they serve as a sort of internal repair system in many tissues, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells. In other organs, however, such as the pancreas and the heart, stem cells only divide under special conditions, according to WebMD. People who have certain blood cancers (such as leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia, aplastic anemia, primary amyloidosis, multiple myeloma or myeloproliferative disorders), solid tumors or other life-threatening diseases depend on bone marrow or cord blood transplants to save their lives. Essential for these individuals is the need to obtain healthy bone marrow and blood cells. Patients dealing with distress and/or depression may benefit from a pharmacologic medication (antidepressant). The antidepressant selected should be based on the primary symptoms, the patient’s prognosis, co-morbid conditions, potential side effects and drug-to-drug interactions. Furthermore, there are strong indications that psychosocial therapy can significantly reduce the anxiety, stress and tension related to the procedure. Such psychotherapy may include supportive psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, spiritual/mindful meditation, problem-solving therapy and mindfulness-based therapeutic interventions. Psychosocial therapy has been found to be effective for BMT patients because it improves their overall quality of life and reduces the distress of the procedures.
