Playing
Music
Keeps You
Healthy
By Charles Sebastian
“Listen, play, love, revere, and keep
your mouth shut.”
- Einstein on Bach’s work
Most of us have our favorite music
that we play as part of our routine,
an escape to change our mental state
and take us away from stress and living. While the benefits of music have
been known for a long time, the way
in which these benefits manifest are
different for everyone. Let’s look first
at the ways music helps and affects us,
as given recently by the Mayo Clinic:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Reduces anxiety in cancer
patients.
Generally reduces stress.
Helps during surgery.
Better sound processing.
(Especially important as we
age.)
5.
6.
7.
8.
Boosts heart health.
Eases pain.
Aids memory.
Protects and encourages
mental sharpness.
9. Helps increase the success of
heart transplants.
10. Improves stroke recovery.
While there are many other
benefits, the 10 listed above have
been featured in refereed journals
that have science behind them. The
effects of different types of music
have to do mainly with the altering of
brain waves. In our conscious state,
Beta, our brain waves are working at
15-30 Hz. As the waves slow down

to between 9-14 Hz, the brain enters
Alpha, the calm and meditative state,
where creativity flourishes. Listening
to slower, soothing music helps the
mind achieve this state. This is the
reason slower music can drop us into
a more relaxed state and lead to sleep.
Theta is the next state down, ranging
from 4-8 Hz. In this state, there is an
even deeper relaxation bordering on
sleep, and the sleep state, at 1-3 Hz, is
the slowest and lowest.
Given these states and ranges, different music will urge waves to speed
up or slow down. Playing faster music
