prevention protocol.
What is the role of Statins in
Cardiac Care?
Statin medications are drugs that
help lower cholesterol levels in the
blood. Statins help prevent coronary
heart disease in both patients without
a history of CVD, and those who are
at very high risk of developing CVD,
such as patients with diabetes. Statins
have additional benefits beyond
lowering cholesterol levels; they also
help the lining of the blood vessels
work better, enhance the stability of
atherosclerotic plaques, reduce the
amount of inflammation and damage
done to cells through oxidation, and
keep blood platelets from clumping
together, thus reducing the risk of a
blood clot in the circulatory system.

signs of hostility – such as eye rolling
and criticizing one another.
Hostile partners who also had
symptoms or a history of mood disorder burned an average of 31 fewer calories per hour, which could amount to
up to a 12-pound weight gain in a year.
These participants also had higher
insulin levels for up to two hours after
the meal, increasing the likelihood of
obesity. The hostile, depressed group
also had elevated levels of triglycerides.
Stress is the likely culprit, the authors
postulate. Researchers have already
found that elevated levels of stress
hormones can affect heart rate, blood
pressure, the immune system and slow
wound healing, so it’s no surprise that
stress hormones can also slow down

fat metabolism, as well.
If your primary relationship is going
badly, what should be your major
source of support becomes your major
source of stress. A hostile relationship
can affect your health even if you eat
healthier meals. If you are in a rocky
relationship, try to improve that relationship or ditch it. Conversely, health E

care providers should look at relationships as a point of assessment because
they are likely to promote health or
place health at risk.
