Smiling and laughter are common
side benefits.
Mindfulness and Transcendental
Meditation are two particular
mind body skills being successfully employed in the classroom to
help students and teachers develop
self-regulation skills. Benefits to
students include improved attention and engagement, reduced
ADHD symptoms, reduced stress
and violence, fewer suspensions,
enhanced academic achievement
and a greater sense of emotional
well-being. Benefits to teachers
include less anxiety and depres-
sion, increased job satisfaction,
lower burnout scores and staff
turnover and a renewed commitment to teaching as a career and
life mission. In this emerging field
of “contemplative pedagogy,” both
students and teachers at the K-12
and collegiate levels are gaining
specific tools that help them navigate emotional ups and downs in
school and at home. In addition
to meditation, some school-based
contemplative programs include
the cultivation of self-compassion,
journal writing, art and creative
expression, yoga, improv games,
nature walks and small-group
discussions. Mindfulness teaches
students and teachers to be present with their emotions rather
than judging themselves for having
certain emotions. Self-compassion
helps students and teachers respond
to their emotions with greater openness, curiosity, acceptance, kindness
and self-care. This leads to greater
understanding and acceptance of
the emotional expression of others.
This builds community.
We have clearly entered a new era
in which children, adults, students,
teachers and health professionals
are all being helped to learn, teach
and heal using evidence-based mind
body skills.
