Mind and Body,” describes the 6
major benefits of keeping a charitable
mindset:
1. You may live longer
There is evidence to show
mortality rates are higher in
those who do not give back.
2. You may be happier
There is evidence to show people who give back have lower
rates of depression.
3. You can build your resume
4. You can strengthen a bond
5. You will set a good example
6. Your heart will thank you
Most us know that people who
are greedy, mean, quick to anger, and
lack integrity are fear-based people.
While they are all on their personal paths, they damage the world
through their fear, ignorance, and low
consciousness. It’s time to move past
these older, more animalistic models,
as we push into the age of spirituality,
helping others and ourselves; a win/
win for the world, moving us all from
self-importance to true significance.
Health through
Community Service
By Charles J. Sebastian
Some of the most rewarding time
spent is the time we give to others
through unselfish acts of kindness
and charity. The world is in constant
need of giving; it always has been
and always will be. While the havenots constantly appeal to the haves
for what they want and need, the
haves remain in the position to dole
out charity as they see fit. This sometimes makes the difference between
survival and expiration for those in
dire need of food, shelter, and funds
to live properly. But what of the
effect on those upon whose charity
they rely? What are they getting out
of the exchange besides being called
charitable and tax write-offs?
The deeper answer to that lies in
the psychology of our health. Zig
Ziglar talks about the move from
importance to significance, where
a person has achieved an important
status or monetary foothold, yet
there is emptiness. The proverbial
ladder of success has left them void
of accomplishment, of true achievement, and of lack of purpose. This is
universal cross-culturally: that there
is an inherent need in us to help others and somehow our happiness in
reliant on everyone getting to the top
instead of one person stepping on the
backs of others. Programs, like The
Center for Family and Community
Services, Goodwill, Red Cross,
Salvation Army, Kiwanis, Scouting,
and many others extend to the
national level as well. These groups
are always looking for donations of
dollars or time to help millions each
year.
While many schedules and budgets in the past five years have tightened as the recession continues to
plow through America, the needs for
community service grow and they
keep growing. The ongoing increase
in the homeless, the unemployment
rate, and the resultant increase in
crime all are red flags for economic
weakening. They are also signs that
the need for community service at
the grass roots level will increase and
the need for mature citizens who rise
to the occasion, realizing their own
mental health and good fortune rely
on their willingness to help others
grows.
