The APIC research agenda outlines opportunities for partner organizations with infection prevention interests and goals . Through CRPI , APIC seeks to partner with other organizations and institutions with infection prevention and patient safety interests to help fill research gaps and align IP & C research based on the priorities APIC has put forward .”
hospice , veterinary hospitals , schools , prisons , public health , dental clinics , government , behavioral health , consulting , and industry . The research subtopics that emerged as top priorities for APIC members include :
• The impact of artificial intelligence on IP & C practice
• Utilizing electronic medical records to improve practice
• The efficacy and impact of multidrug-resistant organisms ( MDRO ) testing guidelines and interventions
• Implementation challenges of manufacturer ’ s instructions for use ( IFUs ),
• Identification of gaps in surveillance definitions
• IP & C staffing requirements and required tasks
• The frequency of the use of transmission-based precautions for MDROs and their impact on HAIs
Many other topics emerged as top choices including aerosol generating procedures ; device-associated infections ; diversity , equity , and inclusion ; and cleaning , disinfection and sterilization .
In the second membership survey , other key topics emerged , including :
• Research gaps in data and informatics : The questions arising from this topic include :
▪ How accurate and efficient is HAI surveillance with algorithms using Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) compared to human-performed surveillance ?
▪ Determine the predictive capability of AI to identify patient infection risk and detect early outbreaks and clusters .
▪ What would be required for infection preventionists to feel confident utilizing surveillance data gathered through AI ?
• Research gaps in workforce development and training : The questions arising from this topic include :
▪ How is IP & C program effectiveness defined and measured , and how is the value of an effective IP & C program determined ?
▪ What is the projected staffing need for IPs in the future ?
▪ What are the impacts of having a fully staffed IP & C program ( according to the APIC staffing calculator )?
▪ What is the relationship between education and discipline of IPs on effectiveness and outcomes in practice ?
▪ Is IP compensation ( including managers and directors ) appropriate in comparison with responsibilities and requirements ?
The APIC report also outlined several research inquiries related to significant topics . These include :
