“ In reality , many of our IP & C teams are already doing a lot of that broad work to some extent ,” she remarks . “ It ’ s not like these are brand-new responsibilities , and many IPs and healthcare epidemiologists are already working with other healthcare stakeholders such as environmental services to accomplish what needs to be done around HAI prevention . So again , we ’ re already doing a lot of work . Dr . Talbot and the other whitepaper authors are advocating for healthcare facilities to provide the support that we need to continue to do this work in an effective way that doesn ’ t spread our teams too thinly .”
Yokoe also acknowledges the ongoing importance of readiness for the next big outbreak or pandemic .
“ It ’ s such a challenging issue , in that it is inevitable that we will see an increasing number of infectious disease crises in the future , whether it ’ s H5N1 or the next big new and emerging or re-emerging infectious disease . I think that makes it even more important than ever that we have the infrastructure that we need to support our core work around infection prevention while also providing us with enough flexibility so that we ’ re able to respond to these infectious disease crises as they as they emerge .”
During the COVID-19 pandemic we were all drowning in our day-to-day work when others came forward and stated things that weren ’ t rooted in data . We must provide reliable scientific information in a way that ’ s unemotional , that ’ s factual , that ’ s informative , that when we don ’ t know and we have uncertainty , we are upfront about it and then work hard to find the answers .”
Talbot concurs , noting that “ Whether it ’ s H5N1 becoming a bigger threat or it ’ s something else , there ’ s always things that happen to test our preparedness ,” he says . “ While some facilities are better prepared than others , everyone is now more aware of challenges that I don ’ t think we anticipated prior to the COVID-19 pandemic . I do think that the IP & C community is on top of dealing with whatever the threat may be , but going forward , we ’ re going to have to be even more responsive as well as being proactive . We will also need to be more visible , more willing to state the science and the evidence . During the COVID-19 pandemic we were all drowning in our day-to-day work when others came forward and stated things that weren ’ t rooted in data . We must provide reliable scientific information in a way that ’ s unemotional , that ’ s factual , that ’ s informative , that when we don ’ t know and we have uncertainty , we are upfront about it and then work hard to find the answers . It ’ s critical for us to demonstrate our expertise because that ’ s what we do on a daily basis . We must never say we don ’ t have time to do that , even in the midst of whatever significant challenge we are facing , because it ’ s everyone ’ s responsibility to be accountable for HAI prevention .”
