HAI Prevention Progress is Sustained but Resourcing Needs Persist
By Kelly M . Pyrek
While the 2023 annual National and
State Healthcare-Associated Infections ( HAI ) Progress Report shows decreases in the major HAIs , experts remind healthcare professionals of the importance of not being complacent around upholding patient and personnel safety as we begin 2025 .
This latest HAI Progress Report provides the most recent incidence data collected across four healthcare settings : acutecare hospitals ( ACHs ), critical-access hospitals ( CAHs ), inpatient rehabilitation facilities ( IRFs ) and long-term acute-care hospitals ( LTACHs ).
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC )’ s HAI surveillance system , National Healthcare Safety Network ( NHSN ), aggregates data from more than 38,000 healthcare facilities and reports on central line-associated bloodstream infections ( CLABSIs ), catheter-associated urinary tract infections ( CAUTIs ), ventilator-associated events ( VAEs ), surgical site infections ( SSIs ), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA ) bloodstream events , and Clostridioides difficile ( C . difficile ) events .
