In-depth qualitative and mixed methods research is needed to better understand how nurses prioritize care and why care is missed . Longitudinal and experimental research is required to better clarify if these relationships between missed care and negative patient outcomes are likely cause and effect .”
worker staffing levels were very high there was a reduced level of missed care . Interest in missed care nursing has often been based on its role as a potential mechanism explaining the association between patient safety outcomes and nurse staffing levels . The hypothesis that low staffing contributes to high mortality through missed opportunities to identify and prevent deterioration is an important part of the argument that these associations between staffing and outcomes are causal .”
Outcomes of Missed Nursing Care
Chaboyer , et al . ( 2020 ) report that outcomes of missed nursing care included less / poorer quality of patient care , patient satisfaction , and nurses ’ job satisfaction , increased patient adverse events , and the organizational outcomes of increasing hospital length of stay and hospital readmission . As the researchers note , “ In-depth qualitative and mixed methods research is needed to better understand how nurses prioritize care and why care is missed . Longitudinal and experimental research is required to better clarify if these relationships between missed care and negative patient outcomes are likely cause and effect .”
Recio-Saucedo , et al . ( 2018 ) note that the literature indicates that lower levels of registered nurses on duty increase the likelihood of patients dying on hospital wards , and the risk of many aspects of care being either delayed or left undone ( missed ). In their review , the researchers found 14 studies which reported associations between missed care and patient outcomes . Some studies were secondary analyses of a large parent study . Most of the studies used nurse or patient reports to capture outcomes , with some using administrative data . Four studies found significantly decreased patient satisfaction associated with missed care . Seven studies reported associations with one or more patient outcomes including medication errors , urinary tract infections , patient falls , pressure ulcers , critical incidents , quality of care and patient readmissions . Three studies investigated whether there was a link between missed care and mortality and from these results no clear associations emerged .
The researchers say there is a modest level of evidence exploring missed care and patient outcomes generated mostly from nurse and patient self-reported data . They observe , “ To support the
