Organizations can no longer concern themselves with just what happens within their four walls , but must look at the entire continuum of care , in all facilities and provider organizations . Physician / end user engagement is key , as well , following a defined process involving preparation for the meeting , presenting the data , creating a decision matrix , making decisions , and then defining success , including what will be measured . Those keys to success include understanding the dynamic between patients and providers ; gaining executive leadership support , defining best practices , using the data effectively , achieving engagement and alignment , providing constant communication and transparency , following the V = Q / C equation , leveraging timing , and following up .
Strain also shared the impact of procedures on healthcare costs :
• Supply costs represent 30 percent or more of hospitals cost per procedure
• 60 percent of those supply costs are related to high technology , high price , low volume items
• Growing demand through 2040
• At the hospital level , managing procedures is one of the best opportunities to reduce costs and improve margin
She also addressed how data makes a difference :
• Purchase history
• Market share by units or by dollars
• Cost per case , cost per physician ( user )
• Reimbursement per case / MSDRG / procedure
• Profitability : total billed patient encounter
Here ’ s a look at other key highlights from the AHVAP annual conference .
• In the opening keynote address , “ Resilient Culture - Transitional Professional : Keys to Thriving ,” Randy Bradley , PhD , CPHIMS , FHIMSS , associate professor of information systems and supply chain management at the University of Tennessee , explained the keys to thriving in a dynamic and volatile work environment , the stages of transformation , and how to articulate a plan that helps value analysis and supply chain professionals transition from current state to future state . Bradley emphasized that what helped clinicians during the pandemic could also hurt them :
Pre-COVID-19 :
• Procurement has mainly focused on cost savings
• Value analysis is a luxury
Peri-COVID-19 :
• Top priorities shifting to business continuity planning
• Risk mitigation
• Disaster recovery
Post-COVID-19 :
• New appreciation for the strategic importance of value analysis — and the need to transform it
• Value analysis differentiator , who ’ s at the table , what are the stakes
Skills needed to lead through to the next normal , according to Bradley , include surveyors , purveyors , and aggregators , including soft skills of comfort and confidence .
• In the presentation , “ Getting to the Hard Stuff ! Physician Lead Performance Improvement Projects : Premium Product Utilization Based on Clinical Evidence and Criteria for Use ,” Keith Beiermeister , MD , from Scripps Health , described methods to identify and engage physicians in supporting standardization initiatives . He discussed multiple communication strategies and unique tactics that could be used when implementing criteria for use with premium products and identified potential barriers . He also emphasized the need for system alignment , noting that independent assessment performed on the “ value ” of each request with particular attention to specific pillars :
