funding , health departments invested in proven strategies and initiatives including :
● More than 9,000 prevention-based infection control assessments in healthcare facilities
● More than 50,000 outbreak responses to novel multidrug-resistant pathogens
● More than 90,000 healthcare workers trained in infection prevention and control
In 2021 and 2022 , CDC ’ s AR Lab Network tested more than 230,000 patient samples for detection and characterization of antimicrobial-resistant organisms . This testing helped inform efforts to stop spread and protect patients .
Starting in 2025 , the CDC will release estimates for at least 19 antimicrobial resistance threats and an update on the U . S . burden of antimicrobial resistance , by pathogen , in a new electronic format .
CDC ’ s previous antimicrobial resistance threats reports , published in 2013 and 2019 , were important resources to guide U . S . policy for and investments in combating antimicrobial resistance .
Starting in 2025 , CDC will release estimates for at least 19 antimicrobial resistance threats and an update on the U . S . burden of antimicrobial resistance , by pathogen , in a new electronic format .
Going forward , the CDC says it will release new estimates for the burden of these threats at least every two years . Data are critical to guide efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance , and CDC is committed to providing the high-quality data required to steer this important work .
Following the release of the CDC ’ s data , the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America ( SHEA ) called for full support of CDC programs combatting antibiotic resistance .
“ These data and the threat that antimicrobial-resistant infections pose underscore a continued need to sustain investments in CDC programs that advance prevention strategies ,” said Thomas R . Talbot , III , MD , MPH , FSHEA , president of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America ( SHEA ) board of trustees , in a statement . “ Sufficient funding for effective infection monitoring practices , accurate laboratory detection and rapid response are critical to limiting harmful resistant infections .”
Talbot added , “ The House FY2025 Labor , Health and Human Services , Education , and Related Agencies Appropriations bill passed last week unfortunately slashes funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by 20 percent , eliminates the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality , while radically restructuring the National Institutes of Health . Enacting these drastic cuts would hinder efforts to combat the advancing threat of antimicrobial resistance . We strongly urge House members to reverse course and build on the investments made in FY2024 and fund the FY2025 bill at a level that meets the needs of our nation ’ s health . These investments are needed to ensure our work toward fighting antimicrobial resistance is not disrupted .”
