• Improving the relationship between SP professionals and IPs is essential because the two disciplines complement one another in far more ways that they detract, and a strong working partnership can result in better outcomes far more effectively than if each side attempted to work on their own. information and work to ensure the SPD has what it needs to do the job safely, efficiently and effectively. When the IP understands what SP professionals need and why they need it, it is easier to work as a team to put in the request and share the rationale behind its necessity. IP/SP partnerships can also lead to better experiences and outcomes with external audits. When the two sides work well together, they will not only be better prepared in regard to procedures, processes and having the right equipment, but both will also be more prepared to answer questions from surveyors. For the SPD, it is helpful to not only be able to explain what takes place within the department and the rationale behind the processes/practices, but also that the department has worked alongside the IP to ensure the processes are safe, effective and follow instruction for use, best practices and standards. For an IP, having a keen understanding of what goes on in SPD and having the ability to speak to the processes the SPD follows makes the IP more effective in answering questions during an audit. Building the bridge Depending on the current relationship between the two departments, taking the first step toward building a better partnership may actually be the most challenging part of the journey, especially if feelings of distrust or animosity are present. If the SPD makes the first step, it may seem a bit counterintuitive and some lingering feelings of apprehension about reaching out to IP for assistance could linger. If the IP takes the first step, it could be more effective to request an initial meeting and state their intention to make a fresh start and build a new foundation between the two departments. In either case, it may involve a leap of faith for both parties and a willingness to put aside past differences. Conclusion Improved SP/IP collaboration helps steer process improvement that will improve patient safety. Partnering on policies and procedures makes these practices more robust and can lead to improved instrument cleaning and sterilization. It can also lead to better survey scores – a positive outcome that helps demonstrate SPDs are following processes, policies, standards, and best practices that improve customer service and care quality.
