REGISTERED MASSAGE THRAPIST MEET TERESENE WALSH-OAKLEY TERESENE WALSH-OAKLEY is a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) who specializes in Complete Decongestive Therapy/Manual Lymph Drainage (CDT/ MLD). She completed her training at the Steve Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy (Vodder Technique). Additional modalities include Myo-Fascial/Scar Tissue release, Reiki Level I and II, Reflexology, and Auricular Therapy. Her clinic, Pro-Motion Therapeutic Services, is a private practice situated in the HealthQuest location at 300 Kenmount Road, St. John’s. Teresene (Terry) has been a practicing Massage Therapist for 20 years and a Lymphedema Therapist for 15 years. She is a member of the Massage Therapy Association of NL and has held the offices of President, Past-President, and board member for 15 years. She currently serves as PR Director of the Lymphedema Association of NL (LANL) and is a volunteer with Lymphie Connections, a Lymphedema Support Group in St. John’s. She is a certified fitter for compression garments, a certified Personal Trainer, a certified YogaFit Instructor, and certified Aquatic Lymphatic Therapy (ALT) Instructor. The ALT program she completed was taught by Dorit Tidhar based on the principles of the “Casley Smith Exercise Program for Lymphedema.” This ALT program is the first of its kind east of Montreal. The CDT/MLD portion of Terry’s practice encompasses approximately 80 percent of the therapy provided to her patients. Being one of a few private practicing Lymphedema Therapists in the area, Terry consults and collaborates with the Lymphedema Nurse Coordinators/ colleagues throughout the province but especially with the H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. Lymphedema patients are usually referred through Nurse Coordinators/Practitioners, Physio- Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Healthcare Professionals, and Doctors for treatment of both primary and secondary symptoms of Lymphedema. Terry encourages every patient she works with, provides education, and demonstrates self-management techniques for Lymphedema. Her primary goal for each and every patient is to provide empowerment, education, and encouragement before, during, and “always” after each treatment. This promotes a positive experience and enhances quality of life. It truly is a treatment that has a lasting effect on the patient. Terry is consistent in upgrading skills and learning new techniques to enhance her practice. In her spare time, Terry teaches shallow water fitness, practices yoga, and loves to travel, cook, and spend time with her beautiful supportive family.
